With Melanie and Devin

I very much enjoy having my former students visit my classes and today was definitely no exception as my Internet/Social Media Marketing class was visited by Melanie and Devin Duncan. Melanie Duncan graduated in 2008 and met her future husband Devin Duncan while he was also studying at Chapman University. As true serial entrepreneurs, they have worked on, and successfully launched, a number of businesses together including Custom Greek Threads, Luxury Monograms, as well as a business around the Melanie's personal brand. The Power of Information

Reggie Gilyard introduces the Janes Financial Center

Had a very pleasant evening at the inauguration of the impressive Janes Financial Center at the Argyros School of Business and Economics. The Center is equipped with twelve Bloomberg terminals providing state-of-the-art, real-time, financial data and business research information to students. So now the score is that Chapman University has twelve Bloomberg terminals while USC has two, or was it one? [Read more…]

Good Domain Parenting

January 30, 2013 by Niklas Myhr 4 Comments

When speaking about social media, I often draw laughter when I say that I find it incredible that there are still parents out there who name their babies without first checking if the matching domain name is available. What they don't know is that I am only half-joking when I make that statement. Perhaps “incredible” is an exaggeration but I do maintain that you could do your child a great favor if you think ahead in this regard. I registered our two kids' domains when they were about 5-6 years old and was lucky myself to find them still being available. Yes, it is possible that .com as a top level domain will be more or less irrelevant when the time comes for them to “brand” themselves online as technology changes. Still, the expense of about $10 a year pales in comparison to all other investments parents make in their kids future and the rewards could be significant.

Case in point. In today's class when I said the above, one of my students came up and said that that was exactly what his dad did when he was born! His name “Zachary Campbell” is a common one as well but thanks to his dad's foresightedness, he now outranks others with the same name, even some semicelebrities.

What Social Media Can Do

January 28, 2013 by Niklas Myhr Leave a Comment

In my first social media marketing classes today, students were asked to identify various uses of social media, preferably with a business use case in mind. If you cannot read my handwriting… here comes some of the prominent uses of social media:

  • Communication/Conversations
  • Connection/Network
  • Humanization/Personalization
  • Marketing Research/Opportunity Identification
  • Brand presence/Awareness creation
  • Reminders about ones existence
  • Employee relations and employer branding
  • Collaboration
  • Communities
  • News

Social media is quite multifaceted in other words! Not bad, huh? So, are you leveraging most of these uses or are you limiting yourself?

Neal Schaffer Unplugged on Social Media in B2B

April 17, 2012 by Niklas Myhr Leave a Comment

Monday night in my Social Media Marketing MBA class at Chapman University, we were joined by Neal Schaffer, a Forbes Top 30 Social Media Influencer and Award-winning author for his books on using LinkedIn in a B2B (Business-to-Business) context for sales and social media marketing. Neal generously shared his views extemporaneously in a rapid fire fashion honoring his parents' New York origins. In so doing, he painted a very hopeful picture for B2B companies that embrace social media and offered a roadmap for doing so.

The Man who brought Facebook to “The Node Pole”

Matz Engman of Luleå Business Agency & Niklas Myhr
Office of Matz Engman of Luleå Business Agency

Had a very pleasant lunch meeting today in the city of Luleå in the province of Norrbotten in northern Sweden with Matz Engman, CEO of Luleå Business Agency (Luleå Näringsliv) currently busy marketing The Node Pole. Matz has had a multifaceted and intriguing career both as an executive in bigger corporations, as an entrepreneur, and even as a Swedish Elite League hockey referee. He had many stories to tell about the two-year sales cycle from initial contact to Facebook’s official announcement to establish themselves just an hour south of the Arctic Circle. Sounds like a challenging sales job to get one of the most iconic brands of our times up here. Ironically, he said that once they had fine-tuned their sales pitch, it was easier to bring Facebook to Luleå than to get a Stockholm-based company to set up shop way up north!

Mari Smith and The New Relationship Marketing

September 16, 2011 by Niklas Myhr Leave a Comment

Niklas Myhr, Mari Smith, Zee PatelAfter Wednesday’s Back-to-School Night at our kids’ Elementary school, I made it slightly late to a very educational and entertaining Linked Orange County event with Social media superstar Mari Smith at the Hilton Hotel in Costa Mesa. In what should have been a stop on a book tour (new release date October 25), Mari eloquently laid out the key elements of her upcoming book “The New Relationship Marketing: How to Build a Large, Loyal, Profitable Network Using the Social Web” (not an affiliate link).
