December 2019 note: Feedback form for businesses which participated:
*** Wednesday night September 4 update: SURVEY CLOSED, ALL TEAMS MATCHED UP WITH A BUSINESS! Thank you all for the great interest to help my students get some real-world exposure, your offering of your business as study objects is warmly appreciated regardless of whether a student team chose to work with you this time. If there’s any consolation, I can offer you a free book chapter via tsmp.me/chapter
If you were lucky that a student team picked you, you should hear from them shortly to confirm and then work with you to set up a first meeting, at least a virtual one ideally before next class. The goal of that first meeting is simply for the students to learn more about your business, your markets, and what you hope to get help with, not for the students to rush to any possibly premature judgments or recommendations.
Does your business need help with social media and digital marketing? Right now my students in my Social Media & Digital Marketing elective are selecting businesses or organizations to help in terms of their online or international presence and some teams want me to help them find an interesting business to help. For priority consideration, please complete the brief survey at the bottom of this post as soon as possible!
Your willingness to facilitate a student project is much appreciated and non-profit organizations are also encouraged to participate as we wish to reach out more to the broader community. While some students typically have ideas of what company they would like to work with, others would be very excited about the opportunity to work with real businesses or organizations that they otherwise would not have gotten in contact with such as the Swedish bicycle clothing brand Sigr in Umeå in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden that a team worked with in the past. That is, your business can be located anywhere in the world as you can collaborate with my students online.
Disclaimer: There are no guarantees that your project will be chosen by any student team but please consider throwing your name in the hat if you are willing to open up and allow for students to gain some valuable real-world experience. Please note that these project teams are not to be mistaken for paid consultants. In the past, some businesses have been very grateful for the valuable help they have gotten and some organizations have indeed achieved higher levels of social media presence, implemented back-end processes for content creation and social media management, and a better understanding of digital marketing strategies that may work for them going forward. In other cases, businesses had expected more from the students. That is just the name of the game and neither I personally nor Chapman University is responsible for the actions or recommendations by the students.
